Barcode scanners are electronic devices that were designed for printed barcodes. The above mentioned photodiode is designed for measuring the intensity of the light reflected back from the light source and generates a waveform which is used for measuring the widths of the bars and spaces in the bar code.

• Laser scanners – they work just like the pen type readers with a single exception: they use a laser beam as the light source and usually employ either a rotating prism or a reciprocating mirror in order to scan the laser beam back and forth across the entire bar code. Just like in pen type readers, a laser scanner uses a photodiode for measuring the intensity of the light reflected back from the bar code.

• CCD readers – use an array of hundreds of small-sized sensors that are lined up forming a row in the reader’s head. Each of the sensors can be considered to be a single photodiode that is designed for measuring the intensity of the light immediately in front of it. The main difference between a CCD reader and laser scanners or pen type readers is that the CCD reader is measuring the emitted ambient light from the bar code in comparison with the other two which are measuring the reflected light from a specific frequency originating from the scanner itself.

• Camera-based scanners – are considered the newest type of bar code readers available on the market. They use a small-sized video camera for capturing an image from a bar code. The reader afterwards uses sophisticated digital image processing methods for decoding the bar code. Video cameras use the exact same CCD technology as in a CCD bar code reader with a little difference; instead of having a single row of sensors, a video camera has literally hundreds of rows of sensors arranged in a 2D array in order to generate an image.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE)

It is rigid, extremely tough and impact-resistant, has good creep and fatigue resistance, wide range temperature resistance (-40 to 220° C) and does not flow on heating. This material is usually oriented to improve its barrier properties to gasses and water vapor. It has excellent clarity and is often used as a glass replacement. C-PET is widely used to produce containers for carbonated beverages and solvents due to its good resistance and barrier properties and is extremely easy to recycle, which makes it very environment friendly.

These various thermoplastic polymers are used in the production of various packaging materials. These polymers (the ones mentioned below) generally have good resistance to alcohols, oils grease and dilute acids and alkalis. Acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene - Rubber (ABS)

Properties: Hard and rigid, opaque, glossy, tough, good low temp properties, low creep, very good resistance to dilute acids and alkalis, oils and greases. This type of rubber is predominantly used in other industries and has few uses in packing, being mostly used as a shock absorbent within product cases and boxes for shipping.

Polyamide or 'Nylon' (PA)

Nylon is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers known generically as polyamides and is one of the most commonly used polymers. It is a high barrier material to oxygen and carbon dioxide and a moderate barrier to moisture. Widely used as the barrier component in a laminate; it has poor heat sealing characteristics and is an expensive material to produce.

Some other useful properties: Rigid, translucent, tough, fatigue and creep resistant, resistant to fuels, oils, fats and most solvents, steam sterilizable, but with poor resistance to dilute acids and alcohols.

Nylon - PA is used in packaging in the form of nylon film as a starting point. Natural Nylon films are ideal for use in a variety of food packaging applications. They perform well as a vacuum bagging film for the molding of critical composite parts in the production of aircraft parts. They allow a wide range of applications including solvent recovery bags, and environmental disposal bags. They are also available in custom-sized sheets for use in a variety of shielding and overwrap applications.

Polycarbonate - Caliber or Makrolon or lexan (PC)

Polycarbonates are a particular group of thermoplastic polymers. They are easily worked, molded, and thermoformed. Their interesting features (temperature resistance, impact resistance and optical properties) position them between commodity plastics and engineering plastics.

Other properties: Rigid, transparent, outstanding impact resistance (to -150° C) good weather resistance, dimensional stability, resistant to flames, good resistance to most fluids.

This material not often used as a food packaging material as it is extremely expensive to purchase. It has excellent clarity and good barrier properties and is generally used in the production of bottles and glasses for drinking.

Polyvinylchloride & Polyvinyl Dichloride – SaranWarp, ClingFilm (PVC & PVdC)

PVC is the third most widely used thermoplastic polymer after polyethylene and polypropylene.

PVC properties: Variable flexibility, clear, durable, weatherproof, flame resistant, good impact strength, good electrical insulation properties, but limited low temperature performance.

It has good barrier properties to gasses and moisture if not highly plasticized. When plasticized, it is a poor barrier material and is used to over-wrap fresh produce. It can be thermoformed and has good heat sealing characteristics. In the past it was widely used to contain bottled water.

There are environmental concerns associated with PVC; consequently its use has decreased in recent years. Furthermore, migration of the vinyl chloride monomer from the packaging material into the packaged food has safety implications which are being investigated.

PVC Packaging: Several simple properties have made PVC invaluable as one of the key plastics used in modern day packaging to protect and preserve products. In the EU, ½ million tons of PVC is used to produce rigid and flexible (cling) film for packaging of foodstuff and closures.

- PVC protects against contamination by helping to prevent the spread of germs during manufacture, distribution and display, particularly in the form of cling film.

SBR is generally used in the production of car tires, shoe soles and gaskets, however, it is also used to make sealing caps for bottles and jar-containers as well being used in shock absorbent packaging.

Corrugated packaging boxes are some of the most commonly used forms of transport packaging in the world today. The raw material used for this form of packaging is corrugated paperboard (or simply 'board'), and it is produced in many ways and with many specifications in order to fit the corrugated packaging and corrugated transport material requirements for a particular product and its supply chain, starting from a factory to the doorstep of a consumer. In the US alone, 95% of all consumer products are shipped in corrugated boxes, with 75% of this amount of box material being recycled each year. The basic principle is to use combinations of paper and adhesives with varying levels of heat and pressure; which allows for a variety of types to be produced, with varying levels of strength, weight and durability.

Corrugated paperboard starts out with basic liner (also called paperboard; from which the name comes) in massive rolls. The wavy paper shown below, sandwiched between the straight papers is called the corrugating medium (while the straight paper on both sides of the wavy one are the liners).

Common Corrugated Paperboard types and uses

Single-face Corrugated Board: A single liner is glued to a corrugated medium to form a single-face paperboard. This is commonly seen in packaging for fine china, light bulb etc.

Single-Wall Corrugated Board: Two liners are glued to either side of the corrugating material to form a single-wall paperboard. This is the simplest and most widely used form of packaging for shipments for a variety of plastic goods and food products. This is the box consumers come across most often In daily life.

Double-Wall Corrugated Board: When another layer of corrugating material and a layer of liner is added to a single-wall paperboard, the resulting product is the much stronger and shock absorbent double-wall paperboard. This form is heavier and more expensive and is generally used to ship/ transport bulk packaged foods, material like nails and rivets, appliances like TV's and DVD players and even furniture. For larger and heavier goods, Triple-Wall Corrugated Paperboard is produced in the same way.

Production

Corrugated paperboard is specifically designed to fit product based requirements. Producers usually specifically design the kind of paperboard to be used for each specific product type in accordance with transportation requirements, weight and strength and shock absorbent properties. The production of corrugated paperboard is simply explained as follows;

1- The first sheet of straight liner is unrolled and heated.
2- This sheet is then passed through high pressure steam to make it soft and spongy.
3- The sheet is then passed between a set of long sprockets in order to create the ridges (or flutes). This process forms the wavy 'corrugating medium'.
4- The glue is then applied to one side (in case of single-face paperboard) or either side (in single-wall paperboard) of the corrugating medium.
5- Sheets of liner are then unrolled and glued to one or either side of the corrugating medium to form a single-face or single-wall paperboard.
6- Further layers of corrugating medium and liner are added to form double-wall and higher classifications of corrugated paperboard.
